Jathagam porutham, computed the shastra way

Tamil marriage matching (thirumana porutham, jathagam porutham) compares the bride’s and groom’s horoscopes through the ten Dasa Porutham. Unlike a simple guna score, the Tamil system leans on gates: Rajju and Vedha can reject an otherwise agreeable match outright.

We compute all ten porutham from the actual sidereal (Lahiri) birth-star positions of each person — not a lookup table — so Tamil and Kerala families see exactly the poruttham they use, Rajju and Vedha included, and can weigh the North’s Ashtakoota alongside them.

The ten Dasa Porutham

  • Dina — health, longevity and day-to-day wellbeing of the couple
  • Gana — temperament match (Deva, Manusha, Rakshasa)
  • Mahendra — progeny and the wellbeing of descendants
  • Stree-Deergha — the bride’s longevity and marital security
  • Yoni — physical and instinctive compatibility
  • Rasi — mutual prosperity and growth of the family
  • Rasyadhipathi — friendship between the rasi lords
  • Vasya — mutual attraction and influence
  • Rajju — longevity of the marriage bond (a hard gate)
  • Vedha — freedom from mutual affliction (a hard gate)
FAQ

Tamil Porutham — Frequently Asked Questions

Dasa Porutham (“ten matches”) are Dina, Gana, Mahendra, Stree-Deergha, Yoni, Rasi, Rasyadhipathi, Vasya, Rajju and Vedha. Each tests a different dimension of compatibility — longevity, progeny, harmony and prosperity — computed from the bride’s and groom’s birth nakshatras and rasis.

Rajju and Vedha are treated as hard gates: if either fails, the match is traditionally rejected regardless of how many other porutham agree. Dina, Gana, Yoni, Rasi and Rasyadhipathi are the core five most families weigh next; Mahendra, Stree-Deergha and Vasya are considered supportive.

North India uses Ashtakoota — eight kootas scored out of 36 gunas. Tamil Nadu and much of the South use Dasa Porutham — ten poruttham with Rajju and Vedha as pass/fail gates rather than a points total. We compute both from the same birth details, so you can compare.

The core porutham work from the birth nakshatra and rasi. For the fullest analysis — including Mangal (Chevvai) dosha — we use the exact birth date, time and place to derive the real sidereal Moon, Mars and Lagna positions for each person.
